I head contented in to the winter months having wrapped up another ALMS title, having won the last two races outright, but also knowing that the opposition are not going to lie down during the close season which means we (Audi) must come out fighting in 2008.
But in the meantime I’ll be taking a bit of, what I believe can be considered, a well earned break before getting down to some serious testing. During the winter it allows me to take a little holiday, for want of a better word, but in reality there isn’t that much time. I’ve already been busy with some personal sponsor commitments with Jewson and Unipart in the UK since returning from Laguna.
These are always fun events but made even more enjoyable with a championship trophy in your hand. As well as that, Audi keeps me busy with various meetings and media commitments while we have a press conference planned for the Essen Motor Show later this month while I head to Singapore for an Audi R8 promotion before returning home to Scotland for a couple of days.
But of course the real hard work comes with the testing and developing that must be done to keep the Audi R10 TDI ultra-competitive against the likes of Peugeot, Porsche and Acura in 2008. Additionally, the training doesn’t stop so that keeps me busy throughout the winter months.
What I noticed during the course of this year with the development of the Audi and our Michelin tyres, we’re now pulling G-forces that I experienced in Formula One and that means that you need to be extremely physically fit.
During the Petit race at Atlanta, I was in the car for almost three hours – the equivalent of two Grand Prix distances. Pulling a similar G-force means a driver’s body goes through a heck of a lot. Therefore Dindo and I must continue to put in a lot of work to make sure that when the 2008 series kicks off , not only is the car up to speed and ready to take on the competition, but so are Dindo and I.
Next time I’ll reflect on the season just gone . . .
